MUGURUMA KENSEI

There isn’t much to know about Muguruma Kensei’s life. He was born into an average family, the second of three children, and had a relatively prosperous life, complete with wife, children, and a household dog—save for the white picket fence, it was pretty much the perfect life. And despite the fact that he had died before ever reaching the age of thirty, Kensei left the living world with few regrets; his farm was doing well enough to support his family, and he had died quickly, painlessly, finding himself in Soul Society before he could even realize it.

No, what was actually worth noting about Muguruma Kensei was what came after his life. It started off in the typical manner, dizzy spells that Kensei came to realize had been caused by hunger, and his subsequent induction into the shinigami academy. Once he had graduated, he was quickly drafted by the Gotei and placed into the tenth division, where he quickly rose in rank until he reached that of lieutenant, serving under a friend he had met in the academy, Hirako Shinji.

Now, Kensei wasn’t the type who felt compelled to go against Seireitei’s norms, nor was he the type to question when he had a good thing. However, not too long after he had risen to his final post, Shinji informed Kensei that a new technology was being developed, one that involved strengthening a shinigami past the supposed limit, and would provide their numbers with enough strength to maintain a stable control over Hollows and any other threats that could rise over time. Always won over by that smile and convincing tone, Kensei readily complied, undergoing hollowization with his captain and a few select shinigami who were also interested in developing their abilities. Before long, the group was close-knit, spending almost inordinate amounts of the day together, and had even fashioned a name for themselves: the vaizored.

However, things soon went downhill, and fast. Displeased with the utilization of hollowization techniques and with Kisuke’s ventures into specialized gigai, Yamamoto-soutaichou soon ordered for all hollowization developments to stop, and asked for the members of the vaizored to step down from their posts. Unwilling to comply, the group soon fled to Karakura, quickly fashioning a place where they could continue to train while masking their reiatsu, managing to dodge the shinigami for several centuries, until Sousuke came about with his little tea party.

Kensei actually finds it rather funny that Soul Society seems to have come back to the vaizored with their tails between their legs—well, perhaps not Yamamoto, but the rest of the lot—but he isn’t the type to hold grudges either way. These days, Kensei continues to train, his work ethic renewed after coming across Kurosaki Ichigo and his seemingly instantaneous rise to power. Out of all of the vaizored, he is probably the most upfront, the most approachable, and the most level-headed—around outsiders, at least.

One has to wonder how exactly Kensei manages to deal with all of the stress…
